Climate change poses an emerging challenge to sustainability of social and economic development, livelihoods, and environmental management across the globe. The rise in Green House Gases (GHGs) in the atmosphere causes rise in temperature which in turn leads to unpredictable weather including flash floods and drought, and rise in sea level. So far as India is considered, the country is highly vulnerable to climate change because of high physical exposure to climate related disasters (65% is drought prone, 12% is flood prone, 8% susceptible to cyclones) and also the India’ economy and population depends on climate sensitive sectors like agriculture, forests, tourism and fisheries.  The Kerala State Action Plan on Climate Change developed by the Department of Environment and Climate Change, Government of Kerala aims to address negative consequences of climate change and thus reduce risk associated with it. It also envisaged climate change strategies need to be integrated development planning process in the state Vision Placing the climate change concerns at the forefront of sustainable development and for maintaining the quality of life of the people of the State Mission.

· Mainstream climate change strategies into State Level Planning and Development Process.

· Address state specific priority issues with respect of NAPCC

· Safeguard natural resource of the state from climate change impacts

· Address the existing as well as future climate change impacts

· Address the existing as well as future climate change impacts and reduce the associated risk of the state.

MISSION

  • Strengthening environmental governance for maintaining environmental sustainability of the state
  • Integrating environmental aspects in the development processes
  • Investment in environmental management programmes in the state at community level
  • Create a civic movement on upkeep of environmental sustainability

Objectives:

  • To develop responsible attitude and commitment in students to the environment, both at home and community 
  • To provide  knowledge to students on the need of preverving nature and environment 

  •  To give awareness to students to keep clean the college campus and their living premises 

Bhoomithrasena Club is an initiative of Directorate of Environment & Climate Change (DOECC), Govrnment of Kerala, Thiruvananthapuram. DOECC introduced this club in the colleges and higher secondary schools all over the Kerala. The objective of this programmme is to make the students aware of the importance environment education and serve the society through the environmental activities. At present in Kerala almost 400 Bhoomithrasena Clubs are functioning. The main activities of the club are conducting different types of programmes for developing positive attitudes among the students towards nature. Now these clubs are addressing the regional environmental issues and trying to solve the local environmental problems. The DOECC is providing funds to conduct seminars and workshops. 

Bhoomithrasena Club came into existence in MES Ponnani College on 1st July 2017. The Directorate of Environment and Climate Change, Thiruvananthapuram (DoECC) is funding for the formation of the BMCs in colleges and schools; and monitoring the activities of all clubs in major three zones in Kerala.

FIELD VISIT

A group of students with faculty in charge of Bhoomithrasena Club visited the herbal garden maintained by Sri. Jagannadan at Kallurma near Changaramkulam on 09/09/17. He is nurturing about 60 medicinal plants in his land including wide variety of rare species. He used to take classes for the needy in and out of Kerala.
